There are several reasons why USA Prepaid cell phones are gaining in popularity.
Do you love your Contract Cell Company?
Do you love being charged extra for every little thing?
Charged extra for roaming?
Charged extra–lots extra– for going over your minutes?
Charged extra for long distance?
Charged high rates for text messages?
Charged 79 cents or more per minute for calls to Canada and Mexico?
Do you like being forced to pay your bill after you move where you don’t get coverage?
Do you like having your credit slammed for late payments or trying to quit your contract?
Do you like having your credit checked before you can get a phone?
Do you like paying an activation fee?
Do you love paying all kinds of little fees on your phone bill that aren’t explained?
I Quit my Contract Phone
I went with a Prepaid phone because I got exactly what I was paying for. I paid for 300 minutes and two months of service. I got it. I use my phone to get messages to friends and relatives. I do not use my cell phone to chat. I can do that easily enough on my Skype Unlimited Voip phone at home.
In the last couple of years Prepaid cell phones and phone usage has gotten much less expensive. You can now easily get a phone for $20 and service for under $10 a month –you don’t get many minutes for under $10 a month. With many Prepaid plans like Tracfone and T-Mobile prepaid your minutes get cheaper the more you buy at one time.
Both Tracfone and Net10 have these Features
- No activation fees
- No credit checks
- No fee if I stop the service
- No fees for going over my limit, it is always 10 cents a minute.
- No fee for moving your number to Net10.
- No extra fee for roaming
- No fee for long distancein the US.
- Only 5 cents extra per minutefor long distance to over 60 different international countries.
- No surprise overage bills, you can only spend the minutes you have loaded into your phone.
- Buy your new phone and activate it. Turn it on and follow some simple directions and your phone is ready to use with 300 minutes on it.
Tracfone currently has the best rates if you use DMFL and buy three months and 900 minutes at a time. Tracfone is very expensive if you do not have DMFL on you phone.
Buy an LG 225 phone at TracFone and get One Year Card with 800 minutes. With Bonus codes you can get an extra 200 to 300 minutes with this deal. Also if you buy the phone at the same time you get the phone for free. You will get an extra two months of service time when you activate the phone. I got 14 months, 1120 minutes the last time I activated one of these packages. This is the best deal in prepaid phones. $100 free camera phone, DMFL, 1000+ minutes, 14 months service only available at TracFone.com.
Net10 is a little simpler and just offers 10 cents a minute all the time. If you purchase 300 minutes or 1200 you will only pay 10 cents a minutes.

Do NOT buy a Net10 phone. It isn’t as simple or evil-free as they make it sound. I bought a phone to use for emergencies only, and was told at the point of purchase that since there is “no contract,” I would never be obliged to buy more minutes than I actually need, nor would there be a schedule under which I’d have to buy the minutes I did need. This was all false. I found AFTER purchasing the phone that you are REQUIRED to either buy huge amounts of air time in advance in order to keep your phone active, or to buy a MINIMUM of 200 minutes a month – again, just to keep your phone active, not because you need the air time. The only way you can cut the cost down to merely $15 a month is to enroll in a “plan” that automatically bills you $15 a month for 150 minutes – even if you only need 50 minutes. Net10 will end up costing you MORE, not less, if you use it as your only phone. I am now stuck with 300 minutes I’ve already paid for, and six days in which to use them before the investment I’ve already made is just lost. “No contract, no hassle, no evil” is a joke. Don’t fall for it!
Marianne,
You are a little confused with your numbers. You can purchase a $30 card for 300 minutes and two months service.
If you want a phone to work you will have to buy service regularly. You are not punished with a $150 penalty if you let your prepaid phone service lapse.
Wanting to buy a phone and use it forever without having to pay is like wanting to never put gas in your car again and still drive it everyday.
Good luck finding a free phone to use.
Rick
